What is an 18S battery?

Solid-state batteries and semi solid-state batteries are manufactured in the form of a single cell, and then these cells are connected in series to each other to form a pack of batteries that has the required voltage at the output.

How many cells are in an 18S battery pack? As the name suggests, a 18S battery uses 18 individual cells of the battery in series to form a 18S configuration. 

Packing battery cells

Multiple cells are connected together to form a battery pack. The cells can be connected in series or in parallel to generate the desired capacity and voltage.

Connection in parallel increases the capacity of the battery pack, while series connection increases the voltage level. What is the voltage output of an 18S battery pack?  When we talk about a 18S battery, it means that the output voltage of the battery pack will be 18×4.2v=75.6v for normal batteries (or 18×4.45=80.1v for ultra high voltage batteries).

How does the performance of an 18S battery compare to a 24S battery? The performance is not different that much, but only the outptut voltage level is different.

So a 24S battery would have a higher output voltage (24×4.2v=100.8v for normal batteries or 24×4.45=106.8v for ultra high voltage batteries).

What are the safety precautions to follow when handling and storing 18S batteries? The battery should be stored in the storage temperature and storage voltage recommended by the manufacturer.

If you have fully charged your battery, it should be discharged to nominal voltage before storage, which can be found in the datasheet of the battery and depends on the type of the battery (whether it is a Li-Po, High voltage Li-Po, or other types).

Most of the battery chargers have predefined programs and automatically discharge the battery to the desired voltage level.

The health status of the battery is highly dependent on how it is used, and stored. How should 18S batteries be properly charged and discharged to maximize lifespan? Do not let your battery voltage level drop too high before charging it. If the voltage level of each cell drops under 3v it applies a lot of stress on the battery and significantly reduces its battery life.

So make sure to always monitor the battery voltage level and disconnect it from your vehicle or put it into charge before reaching the critical level.

What are the common applications for 18S batteries? 18S batteries can be used in any application that requires devices or vehicles running on electric power.

Are 18S batteries suitable for high-power applications like electric vehicles or drones? Of course they are suitable. But you have to make sure that the output voltage level is compatible with all the components that you are using in your vehicle.

For example, in a drone, the most important thing that you should check is the input voltage range of your motors and ESC or speed controllers. If they support 18S, they you have no problem using a 18S battery pack to power your propulsion system.
